Meet the founder
French-born living in California, Merijam Roelofs has founded Folk Project to weave both of her passions for material culture and contemporary design. She has studied at Chardon Savard Design School in Paris and ethnography at the Louvre Museum, where she has explored relentlessly traditional and indigenous culture. Her passion for Maya culture ignited when Merijam moved to Mexico to live with her family in 2005. She discovered Chiapas and felt in love with its mystical beauty and its treasures.
Amazed by the intricacy of the Huipil and its significance, she decided to start a line of one-of-a-kind pillows and small batches of reupholstered vintage chairs. Since then, Folk Project is creating unique furniture and accessories collections, continuing to develop sustainable relationships with artisans in Mexico and Guatemala.
